Steam Monopoly? Devs Speak Out on PC Game Distribution! (2025)

The Steam Monopoly Debate: A Developer's Perspective

In a recent study, an eye-opening 72% of developers expressed their belief that Steam holds a monopoly over the PC gaming market. This revelation sparks an important conversation about the dynamics of game distribution and the future of the industry.

The study, conducted by Rokky, an independent PC distribution platform, surveyed industry executives across the UK and USA. The results paint a clear picture: for the majority of studios, Steam is their primary revenue source, accounting for a staggering 75% of their income.

But here's where it gets controversial: despite Steam's dominance, developers are increasingly exploring alternative platforms. Over half of the surveyed developers feel they rely too heavily on Steam, leading to a potential monopoly concern. With 72% believing Steam has a stronghold, it's no wonder they're seeking diversity.

Rokky's study reveals an interesting shift. While larger studios are more likely to utilize storefronts like the Epic Games Store, independent developers are turning to platforms like Itch.io. Almost half of the surveyed developers have distributed their games across multiple stores, showcasing a desire for broader reach.

And this is the part most people miss: physical media still plays a role! 32% of developers release their games on discs, cartridges, or 'keys-in-boxes'. Marketplaces like G2A and Kinguin, as well as E-stores like Fanatical and Humble Bundle, offer additional distribution channels. Developers appreciate the ease of use, pricing control, promotional support, and international reach these platforms provide.

The future looks bright for alternative distribution methods. 80% of surveyed developers expect to incorporate these channels alongside Steam within the next five years. With a predicted 10% uplift in revenue, it's an exciting prospect. However, concerns remain about the gray market and potential loss of control when using these platforms.

Vadim Andreev, co-founder and CEO of Rokky, sums it up: "PC game distribution is more varied, vast, and complex than ever. New opportunities abound, but so do challenges. Understanding the nuances is crucial."

So, what do you think? Is Steam's dominance a cause for concern, or is it a natural evolution of the industry? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
