Behind every groundbreaking medical discovery lies a monumental effort that often goes unnoticed. But here's the shocking truth: the heroes behind the scenes are frequently overlooked when it comes to funding. Transforming brilliant scientific ideas into life-saving pills or therapies requires more than just researchers—it demands a diverse team of engineers, technicians, cybersecurity experts, and administrative wizards. Yet, these unsung heroes are often left out of traditional research grants, forcing institutions like WEHI to seek alternative funding to keep their operations running smoothly.
Imagine launching a rocket to Mars. You wouldn’t fund just the astronauts and mission leaders, right? And this is the part most people miss: the rocket itself, the fuel, the engineers, and the supercomputers are just as critical. Similarly, in scientific research, every piece of the puzzle—from lab technicians to consumer advocates—is essential for success. Without them, even the most brilliant discoveries remain grounded.
At WEHI, we’re pulling back the curtain to spotlight the indispensable team members who power our journey. Their contributions ensure that our lab discoveries reach patients faster, saving lives and transforming healthcare. But to keep this engine running, we need your support.
Powering the Engine of Discovery
Dr. Julia Man – Division Coordinator, ACRF Cancer Biology and Stem Cells
Think of me as the conductor of an orchestra, ensuring every musician—or in this case, scientist—stays in harmony. Research is drowning in administrative tasks, and my role is to clear the clutter so our brilliant minds can focus on what they do best: saving lives. From managing finances to disseminating findings, I’m the glue that keeps projects on track. It’s incredibly rewarding to see ideas evolve from grant applications to published breakthroughs. And as someone with a PhD in plant biology, I’ve become a walking encyclopedia of WEHI’s projects, from cancer prevention details to project numbers. But here’s a controversial thought: Shouldn’t administrative roles like mine be celebrated as equally vital to scientific progress?
Goran Arsovski – Senior Laboratory Technician (Media Supervisor)
I run the Media Kitchen, Australia’s largest facility of its kind, where we craft the ‘canvas’ for medical research. Our specialized cell culture solutions are the foundation for experiments in medicine, biotechnology, and genetics. Every year, we prepare 20,000 solutions, each requiring precision and expertise. For instance, leukemia researchers rely on our formulations containing specific amino acids—a process that demands meticulous planning and biochemistry knowledge. Without these solutions, cells can’t grow, and research stalls. It’s as simple—and critical—as that. After 34 years at WEHI, I’m still humbled to contribute to life-saving discoveries, knowing my team’s work is the backbone of every experiment.
Kelly Trueman – Consumer Program Coordinator
I bridge the gap between patients, carers, and researchers, ensuring real-life experiences shape scientific discoveries. By connecting 147 consumers with our team, I help researchers understand the human impact of diseases, leading to treatments that truly matter. This collaboration isn’t just about data—it’s about empowerment. Patients feel heard, and researchers gain insights that drive meaningful change. But here’s a question to ponder: Shouldn’t patient voices be at the heart of every research project, not just an afterthought?
The Bigger Picture
Investing in the full spectrum of research costs isn’t just about maintaining standards—it’s about accelerating discoveries that change lives. From lab technicians to consumer advocates, every role is critical. But without adequate funding, progress slows, and potential breakthroughs remain out of reach.
